PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain secured a narrow

PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Girona in their first Champions League match of the post-galactico era, thanks to a costly mistake from Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The decisive goal came in stoppage time when a left-wing cross from Nuno Mendes slipped under Gazzaniga's hands.

This marked the first time in over a decade that PSG entered the Champions League without a star player, often referred to as a “galactico.” After the departures of notable players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi—none of whom managed to clinch Europe’s top club title—PSG is now embracing a new identity that emphasizes homegrown talent and teamwork.

The match was also significant as it was PSG’s first Champions League appearance without Mbappé in seven years, following his transfer to Real Madrid, where he scored on his debut earlier this week. Critics had previously pointed out Mbappé's reluctance to track back defensively.

Coach Luis Enrique was vocal on the sidelines, urging his players to close down better, as Girona maintained possession for over two minutes at one point, leaving PSG’s defenders chasing without purpose. “They defended well and we struggled to create clear chances,” Enrique commented.

The atmosphere at a subdued Parc des Princes turned restless after 34 minutes, with only a couple of half-chances from Warren Zaïre-Emery and Marco Asensio—who left the pitch with a suspected hamstring injury—offering any excitement.

“All teams have areas to improve,” Zaïre-Emery noted. “We have new players who need time to adjust.” This challenge was even more pronounced for Girona, who also saw key players like Artem Dovbyk and Savinho depart.

A standout moment came when Girona defender Ladislav Krejčí executed a remarkable tackle on Ousmane Dembélé as he broke through on goal. However, Gazzaniga’s error at the end ultimately gifted PSG the win.

“We didn’t play well, and we have to acknowledge that,” PSG midfielder Vitinha admitted. “We struggled to keep the ball. Credit to Girona, but we need to reflect on our shortcomings.”
