Inspirational True-to-Life Fiction

The Bench That Changed a Life

 Inspirational True-to-Life Fiction

Daniel Brooks went to the park every morning before the sun came up. He carried a backpack and a notebook. Daniel sat on the old wooden bench under a big oak tree. He watched the birds wake up the world with their songs. He wrote in his journal.

People thought Daniel was retired. Some people thought he was lonely.. Very few people knew what was really going on.

Ten years ago Daniel owned a construction company. He had a home, a loving wife and a daughter who wanted to be an architect. Life was good.

Then everything changed. The economy got bad. Daniels company went bankrupt. This caused problems in his marriage. Then his wife got sick. Passed away. Daniel was very sad. He stopped talking to his friends sold his home and moved to an apartment.

The park was the place where Daniel felt peaceful. One autumn morning Daniel saw a young woman sitting on the other end of the bench. She was looking at a folder with job applications and rejection letters. She looked very sad.

Daniel asked her  day? The woman smiled a little. "It has been a year  she said. Her name was Emily. She had just graduated from university. Could not find a job. Every interview was the same. They said, We will let you know. They never did.

Daniel listened to Emily. He did not give her advice. He just asked her questions. What do you like to do? What problem do you want to solve? What kind of life do you want? No one had ever asked her those questions before.

They talked until the sun was high in the sky. Before Daniel left he gave Emily a piece of paper from his notebook. On it were three sentences.

Learn something every day.

Help someone even if you do not expect anything back.

Do not give up just because things are bad now.

Emily put the paper in her wallet. The morning she went back to the park. So did Daniel. For the six months they met every Saturday. Daniel helped Emily with her resume. He practiced interviews with her. Importantly he helped her feel confident again.

Eventually Emily got a job offer from an engineering firm. It was not her dream job.. It was a start. She took it. Years went by. Emily worked hard. Kept learning. She got promoted to project manager. She helped design homes for people who did not have a lot of money.

Every big decision Emily made reminded her of those mornings in the park. Then one spring Daniel stopped coming to the park. Emily was worried. She went to Daniels apartment building. The manager told her that Daniel had passed away a days earlier.

Among Daniels things was a notebook with a message for Emily. It said, Success is not about how high you climb. It is about how people you help along the way. If our talks helped you promise me one thing. Be there for someone when they need help.

Emily cried when she read the message. She kept her promise. Years later she started a program to help students and people looking for jobs. Hundreds of people came. Some found jobs. Some started their businesses. Others just found the courage to try again.

At the community center there was a bench with a small bronze plaque. It said, Dedicated to Daniel Brooks, who showed that one conversation can change a life forever.

People often asked Emily why she put a bench there of a statue. Emily smiled. Statues are just looked at from away. A bench invites people to sit down listen and start again.

Every Saturday morning someone was always sitting on that bench giving encouragement and hope. They reminded people that hard times do not last forever.

Sometimes the best thing we leave behind is not money or fame. Sometimes it is just being kind, to someone who needs it.

 Life Lesson

Every kind thing we do can have an impact. One nice conversation one helping hand or one moment of kindness can change someones life.. Maybe the lives of people who come after them.
