🌍 International Mother Language Day21 February

International Mother Language Day is observed every year on 21 February to honor linguistic diversity and promote the use of native languages around the world. It was established by UNESCO in 1999 and first celebrated globally in 2000.

🇧🇩 Roots in Bangladesh’s History

The day commemorates a powerful moment in history: the Language Movement of 1952 in what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). On 21 February 1952, students in Dhaka protested against the government's decision to impose Urdu as the sole national language, despite the fact that Bangla was spoken by the majority.

During the protest, several students were killed by police gunfire. Their names—Salam, Rafiq, Barkat, and Jabbar—are remembered as language martyrs. Their sacrifice eventually led to the recognition of Bangla as one of the official languages of Pakistan in 1956.

🌐 Global Importance

  • UNESCO’s mission: To protect endangered languages and encourage multilingual education.
  • Why it matters: Nearly 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their native language.
  • Languages at risk: Every two weeks, one language disappears forever.

📚 Education & Culture

  • Learning in one’s mother tongue improves understanding, confidence, and academic success.
  • It strengthens cultural identity and helps preserve traditions.
  • Promotes inclusion and respect across communities.

🇧🇩 How Bangladesh Observes the Day

  • National holiday with solemn tributes at the Shaheed Minar (Martyrs’ Monument).
  • People lay flowers and hold cultural events to honor the martyrs.
  • Schools and organizations host discussions, poetry readings, and exhibitions.

đŸ—Ŗ️ Why It Still Matters

  • Encourages respect for all languages and cultures.
  • Supports inclusive education and human rights.
  • Reminds the world of the power of peaceful protest and cultural pride.
