Argentina's soccer team's coach criticized the disorderly 'controversy' that unfolded during their Olympic soccer game against Morocco.
The first game of the men's soccer competition was halted for nearly two hours during extra time due to Moroccan fans breaking into the field and hurling bottles in protest over a goal scored by Argentina in the final minutes. This goal was subsequently reversed by the video assistant referee (VAR), leading to Argentina's defeat by 2-1.
Javier Mascherano, the coach of Argentina's soccer team, described the incident as "a scandal." He emphasized that this was not a local tournament but rather the Olympic Games, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
The organizers of the event in Paris have expressed their intention to investigate the incident and take appropriate measures. The Argentine soccer federation has formally protested to FIFA, stating their commitment to ensuring the safety of the players.
"The delay of almost two hours in the dressing room, the intrusion of Moroccan fans onto the field, the aggression faced by the Argentine team, the need for our players to warm up again and play a match that should have been stopped by the main referee, all of this is not only nonsensical but also violates the rules of the competition," Claudio Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association, stated.
